Passion is one of the four elements of change in our life and legacy. The root word for passion is the Latin word “Pati,” meaning suffering. Yes, the root of passion is our willingness to suffer because passion is an act of suffering.
Passion is key. We all have heard this, but do we understand what that means? Passion is key because if what is fueling us to go, do and be is passion, we will suffer what we need. We can suffer, but if we do not suffer leaning on God’s grace, passion is not our motivation.
The word passion is used so lightly, but originally the word passion meant “the burning inside us being so strong, that we would be willing to suffer, for it to be accomplished.” Of course, our best example of this is Christ on the cross when He declared, “It is finished.”
John 19:26-30
When Jesus, therefore, saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus, therefore, had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Passion as our motivation can make us go on without sleep, work through meals, run one more mile, or give our last bit of resources to what we want and need to manifest. Passion is thought to be similar to zeal, and in some ways, it looks the same, although the greatest difference is zeal does not last.
Zeal is defined as an eagerness and ardent interest in the pursuit of something. The biggest difference is that zeal does not equip us to continue when adversity or difficulty presses in to make us want to stop, quit or go in a revised direction. Passion gives us that ability to continue on the path that will bring our purpose until completion, where zeal does not. Although zeal has its place in our life, passion changes us to fulfill a well-crafted legacy and life.
Until next time, remember, we craft our legacy daily, do it as it becometh you. If you would like to the podcast of this Legacy Element of Passion, click here.
The other three legacy elements and many other topics are included in the “Legacy Tips” podcast. Because life is crazy and busy, each of them is ten minutes or less.
Remember, that legacy is the life we live, the choices we make, the truths we share, and the love we unconditionally give, knowing no one is perfect, but we can all bear fruit and fruit that will remain.
